Sustainable Development: The 1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) (Our common future: The Brundtland Report) defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Hence, sustainable development embodies concepts of sustainable use of natural resources and of equity of access to resources both between and within generations. Sustainable development considers environmental and social as well as economic outcomes.
